Wedding photography is a specialized skill, and while experienced fashion photographers are also adept at taking a Wedding Photo, you are advised not to leave the job to somebody who claims to be good at taking ‘pictures’ and wants to try out his brand new digital camera. You don’t usually get two chances with wedding photos so hire somebody who will get it right first time. That is not normally a relative!

Once you have set the date and venue for your wedding, ask around your friends and relatives for a reference. Perhaps their photographer provided fabulous wedding photographs. Once you have looked around, you can either compile a short list, or make a definite choice based on the work that your friends have shown you. One very important aspect of this type of reference, however, is to make sure that you get the same photographer; one company can employ several wedding photographers, so a name is better than a company. If you don’t have a name, visit the company and ask for the person that handled a Wedding Photo that you have seen – they should have that in their records.

Meet with the photographer some time before the wedding. A good wedding photographer will take a few photos of you and your fiancé before the wedding, and build up a dossier of the weeks or months leading up to the big day. Are your wedding photographs to be in digital or on film? There are pros and cons for each, though modern digital photography is generally very good, and it is difficult to tell the difference. The newer high megapixel resolution can allow large blow-ups without loss of definition. A digital Wedding Photo can be enhanced in a way that cannot be done with an image on film, and a massive advantage of digital is that it can be viewed immediately, and retaken if necessary.

If you get the files you can also print off as many copies of a Wedding Photo as you want - make sure that the files come with the contract, preferably in jpeg on DVD. You can then print off copies for all of your guests and include them in your wedding gift thank you letters. You can turn them into key ring or use them for anything you want. That is where the full benefit of digital over photographic film is experienced.

Digital also ensures that the photographer is with you all the time, and not having to return to the studio to develop the films. That, incidentally, is something that you should insist on, because you do not want your photographer working on two weddings on the same day. You should make sure that yours is only wedding being shot that day, and that you are not sharing.

Your Wedding Photo is a permanent reminder of your wedding, and a record of how you both looked on that special day. It will also bring back memories of friends and relatives as you bring out the wedding photos on your golden anniversary 50 years hence.
