How to Choose the Ideal Wedding Gift

    Wedding Gift - history

The traditional Wedding Gift was intended to help provide for the home of the newly married couple. There was a time when people married young and lived with their parents until they got married and started off their own home. They relied upon wedding gifts to furnish their house and get together the basics needed until they had saved enough to buy all the bits and pieces that make up a home.

It was also traditional a long time ago for the woman not to work, but to stay at home looking after the house. The daughter stayed at home with mother and learned the basics of being the typical housewife. When the couple was married neither had much money and relied on a Wedding Gift provided by their respective families and guest.

    Wedding Gift - tradition

Now, however, both members of the union have generally been in gainful employment for some time before they wed and the necessity for a Wedding Gift is less. They are now given as a tradition, and while guest are not obliged to provide a gift, they generally do. It is normally considered best to send the gift prior to receiving an invitation to the wedding to indicate that the gift is voluntary, and not simple given as a result of the invitation. You are not obliged to invite somebody who has provided a gift, though it is generally courtesy to do so.

The problem these days is what to give, since the couple will already have purchased most of their basic needs prior to their wedding. Most couples compile a Wedding Gift list that contains all of the items still needed for their new home. Guests are provided with a copy and choose which to purchase. The list is then returned with their choice struck off. A more hi-tech version of this is to post the list on the internet in an editable form so that guests can mark off their choice. In this way the list is kept totally up to date and there is little chance of a duplication of gifts.

    Wedding Gift - registry

Some larger department stores operate a Wedding Gift scheme whereby guests and relatives check with the store for what gifts have not yet been given from the list and then order it. The store then makes arrangements to collect payment later, either by credit card or in easy payments and gift wraps the gift with a card and message specified by the purchaser, and delivers it directly to the future bride’s home. Although the gifts have to purchased from that department store, this is quite a popular way of managing a list and takes the work off the couple at time when they have a lot more to think about.

Some ideas for a Wedding Gift list include china of a specific pattern. Different pieces can then be given by different people and a really good set build up. We are not only talking about plates here, but also larger pieces such as large bowls and serving dishes. Bed linen is always a good gift since duplication does not matter, and the same is true of money, though that seems rather impersonal. What you have to avoid is receiving several toasters and coffee makers. If you are giving a gift, then think beyond the normal type of household item that is usually given.

    Wedding Gift - cost

If you are making up a list be sure to include gifts over a wide price range. Not everybody can afford a dining room suite! In the china example given above, you could break down what you want into items, such a set of 12 plates, a set of cups and saucers, or a large serving bowl or wine cooler, all in the same pattern. In that way those with less money to spare can still help to provide you with something useful for a Wedding Gift.

As a guest, of course, you are not limited to the list, but it would be foolish to ignore it and buy a kettle! If you want to give something more personal than what is on the list then look to something different by taking the couple’s interests into consideration. If they like art, perhaps a painting by a favorite artist would be appropriate, or commission a portrait of them both. What if they are sporty? You could consider skydiving courses for them, flying lessons or even a few laps round a grand prix circuit in a very fast car. Think personally, and out of the box, and it is unlikely that your Wedding Gift would duplicate someone else’s.

    Wedding Gift - shower

These are just a few examples of Wedding Gift ideas for both the guests and the happy couple. If you are a guest, your gift will be cherished since it will either have met the needs of the couple or will be unexpected and unique. If you are the future bride and groom, you will have tastefully ensured that guests can give what they can afford and that you will be given as few duplicates as possible. You will have a wedding shower that will not only be remembered for ever, but all of which will be of help to you in setting up your new life together.
