    Wedding Cake Design and Traditions

    Wedding Cake Design - tradition

The traditional tiered Wedding Cake Design originated in what could only be described as a cake piling ceremony, that involved guests bringing small cakes and piling them up into one large cake. The bride and groom would then reach over the pile of cakes and try to kiss. If successful without knocking over the pile, the marriage would be a long and fruitful one.

In the 17th century, it is said, a French chef visited London and decided to make the wedding cake in a more stable design and came up with existing traditional tiered cake. Another story claims the Wedding Cake Design to be by local baker William Rich who used the tiered design of St. Brides Church in Fleet Street, London, England, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Neither of these stories has been confirmed, and they are sometimes confused with each other with the French chef designing the cake on St. Bride’s.

    Wedding Cake Design - tiers

Whichever is true or untrue is irrelevant to today’s wedding cake, that is more than just a part of the menu at a wedding. It is still the traditional token of married bliss and good luck, and is why the bride and groom cut it together. The Wedding Cake Design is normally the traditional tiered shape, although some bride’s are increasingly departing from the tradition of using a fruit cake. The modern bride has many possible designs to choose from, not only in whether or not to have a tier, but also in the flavor, type of frosting or icing and the way the cake is decorated.

Traditionally, some of the tiers of the Wedding Cake Design were intended to be eaten by guests at the wedding, and one tier retained and cut so that small pieces could be sent in small boxes to those unable to attend the reception. There is no hard and fast rule which tier should be used for this purpose, and a lot will depend on the size of the tiers and how many absentees have to be catered for.

    Wedding Cake Design - choices

If you are unsure of what Wedding Cake Design you want, you should visit a few cake shops, and thumb through some bridal magazines. You will get plenty of ideas there. Some people revert back to the original cake piling idea, and have a number of tiers composed of individual small cakes, such as cup cakes. Each can be made in a different flavor so that everybody can get what they want.

In deciding what Wedding Cake Design you want for your wedding cake, you should first of all choose the size. That might also be determined by your budget, though it will have to be large enough for all the invited guests and for those relatives and guests who were either not invited or who were unable to attend. In the past, many wedding cakes were deliberately made larger than necessary as an indication of the wealth of the bride’s parents, but this is becoming less common as the price of the cake becomes a more significant part of the overall wedding cost.

    Wedding Cake Design - flavor

Once you have decided on the size, check out what designs are available and that other people are choosing. You are not bound to select the same as others, though, and can have whatever you want from the traditional to the unusual, such as the above mentioned cupcake tiers. Nor are you restricted in flavor. You can have a traditional fruit cake, a vanilla sponge cake, a cream cake or a chocolate cake. Some even have cheesecake, though that seems stretching it a bit for a Wedding Cake Design.

Your frosting does not have to be the traditional white Wedding Cake Design, and can be a mixture of pink and blue, or something more exotic. It can be decorated with fruit or flowers, and many choose fruits and flowers made from marzipan. There is also a wide range of different types of cake topper. Your topper does not have to be the traditional bride and groom figures, but can also be in the form of wedding bells or something that relates to your hobbies, sports or even employment. A set of teeth is sometimes used for a couple who are both dentists for example.

    Wedding Cake Design - memories

It does not really matter what your Wedding Cake Design is, as long as it looks good and you and your guests are happy. Since it is rare for all guests to have the same tastes, many brides choose each tier to made in a different way, such as one fruit tire, one sponge tier, one chocolate tier, and so on. The cake is the traditional start to married life, its cutting being the first act carried out together by the bride and groom.

Is it significant that this is a domestic chore?
