    Choosing your Wedding Cake

    Wedding Cake - choices

Choosing your Wedding Cake is to many brides-to-be almost as important as choosing your dress. You wedding cake might be eventually eaten but it will never disappear, since it will always feature prominently in your wedding photographs and wedding video. The cake, then, is important, and before you start looking for somebody to bake and decorate it you will have to know what you want.

Size is important! That depends not only on the number of guests, but also on the number of people to whom you intend sending some. You will need an idea of size before booking it, and err on the generous side. You can always use extra Wedding Cake, but can’t conjure some up if there is not enough to go round.

    Wedding Cake - design

The filling may or may not be important to you, but there are different types of Wedding Cake from the traditional fruit cake thru sponges of various types and flavors to cheese cakes and mouse fillings. Just as important is the design of the frosting, and also of the cake itself. Round or square, two tiers or ten. What type of pillars or columns? Is your frosting to be while or colored.

Your cake could heart shaped, which is a lot more romantic that traditional round. If your wedding is themed, then so too can your cake be. You can have it any shape you want from a boat to a dove, and even have a number of small tiers, each with a different type of Wedding Cake or flavor. All these have to be decided, though your confectioner will likely be able to advise you.

    Wedding Cake - influences

Just as important as the size, flavor and design of your Wedding Cake is who bakes it. The choice of baker is critical since that will have an influence not only on how your ideas are converted into a work of art, but also on how the finished product looks and tastes. There will be more to the baker or confectioner than that, though, since you will be looking for advice on size and type of cake. It should be moist but not wet, and firm but not crumbly. It is a strange fact that the taste of the wedding cake is not a priority with most brides until the first bite gives the horrible news.

Make sure that you ask your baker for a taste of the cakes in the range. Many women simply taste the frosting, but the whole Wedding Cake is important. Ask for a small groom’s cake as a sample for you to choose from. Some bakers will do this, and it could be useful to find out before you actually make an appointment.

    Wedding Cake - timing

If you want a cake constructed to your own design, or from a picture, then check that out as well. Many do, but the fees they charge make it too much of an expense. Make sure you know all the prices before proceeding with anything, since you don’t want any hidden extras to appear when it is too late to change. Extra could be charged for columns and pillars to set the Wedding Cake up, and even for the setting up. You should also establish if the baker or confectioner is going to set the cake up, since your wedding caterers may not be willing to do this if the cake was not provided by them.

The date of baking is also important. Some types of Wedding Cake are best baked shortly before the wedding while others are best weeks before. Fruit cakes like lots of maturing time, while sponge cakes need to be eaten quickly before they turn hard. The frosting should be fresh, no more than two days old, or it will not taste fresh.

    Wedding Cake - communication

You should contact your baker or confectioner at least three months before the wedding date, since they can often be busy. Much depends on the date since spring and early summer are more popular for weddings than mid winter. Once you have decided on the Wedding Cake you want and had everything agreed regarding costs and who is to set the cake up, get it all in writing. Verbal agreements are no good if anything goes wrong.

Choosing your Wedding Cake is an important job, so don’t leave it till last. If you choose well, get a good confectioner and get it all in writing, then that at least is one part of your wedding that you can relax about.
