There are few places as exotic to get married as on a beach. The golden sand, the sun, the movement, sound and smells of the sea combine to make a unique Beach Wedding experience.

A Beach Wedding is less formal that the traditional church or chapel weddings, with fewer conventions that must be adhere to. They are significantly more relaxed, and less stressful to you and your groom, since the surroundings are less traditional and enclosed, and you seem to have more freedom that in a church with its formality and etiquette that must be observed.

Beach Wedding - choices

You can practically do what you like on a beach. It is a blank canvas on which you can design your own ceremony that can be held at any time of the day that you want, within the constraints of the availability of the officials of course! You can opt for the formality of a large marquee or tent, with all the trappings of a traditional wedding and reception, or a simple ceremony followed by a Beach Wedding barbecue. The choice is yours.

You can be wed in a bower at a cliff top, or in the open air right at the water’s edge. There are few formalities that you have to conform to other than those required by the legal part of the ceremony. You can be married in a traditional wedding gown or in a grass skirt, whatever suits your mood. You can even be married on a boat and party at sea afterwards. You can be married early in the morning or after sunset. In some cases the latter will be a good choice, since many Beach Wedding locations are in very warm climates.

There are some fantastic locations throughout the world, and you can choose any one of them. You have to choose your dates carefully so as to avoid the hurricane season, and many of the Caribbean resorts are very popular for a Beach Wedding, so you lose the privacy factor. However, some islands, such as the British Virgin Islands, are less heavily populated than others and offer a bit of privacy during your ceremony.

In Europe it is not so easy to be married on the beach since in many countries it is the venue that is licensed for weddings, and registrars or ministers cannot marry you just anywhere. This is true in the United Kingdom where outside weddings are generally not possible unless the land is owned by the venue. Exceptions are parts of Greece and Italy, where a Beach Wedding is possible, but they are as popular as traditional church weddings. However, in most European countries you can be married indoors and then have your reception outdoors on the beach. Almost as good, but not quite the same.

It is the Pacific that offers the best Beach Wedding opportunities. Fiji and similar islands in the South Pacific offer a wide variety of wedding options. You can sail to an uninhabited island and get married in total privacy and peace, an experience that will remain in your memories for ever.

Many beach locations are very hot and bright, and most offer the possibility of a gazebo wedding, to give the happy couple a bit of shade from the overpowering sun. Although it has been suggested above that a Beach Wedding in hot climates would be better carried out in the evening, this is not always possible due to the availability of the officials, or even the tides, and in such cases a gazebo wedding is a good alternative, followed by the reception in the open.

Naturally, these receptions are very informal, and many of the guests spend more time in the water than out. Imagine the spectacular and amusing wedding photographs that would give rise to!
